Water is a common feature or inspiration in these works. It is an embodied thing with an elusive physicality. Water is a transitional, liminal space where things emerge from; an idea space. In my animations (viewable on vimeo.com) water is explored as a living, breathing entity, an all-encompassing, consuming environment and a vehicle of transformation.
The paintings that hold reflective pools present a window or frame through the reflection. This reflection is a representation or re-presentation of the visually observed landscape. This is surrounded by the painted experience of place. The paintings speak to the complexity of our observed world, and the nature of indirect experience, as the image of sky and trees are being conveyed through a mediated layer. The paintings exploit the tension between static and active, and embodied versus purely visual modes of perception.
